Xiaomi India Launching 'Desh ka Smartphone' Will Have Great Battery Life

Xiaomi is all set to launch the 'Desh ka Smartphone' in India on November 30, a device the company started teasing earlier this week. We don't know much about the smartphone, with the company leaving very few hints for us to speculate too much upon. That being said, the Redmi India Twitter handle on Friday teased the smartphone would have a great battery life - pointing at either a large battery or optimised software in the form of MIUI 9. The other hint is the wording of the tagline, with 'Desh ka Smartphone' implying it will be an affordable offering.

India is certainly an important market for Xiaomi, with the company holding several 'global' launches in the country, or more specifically, unveiling products for the first time globally at events in the country. Examples of this include the Xiaomi Mi A1 and MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM. Xiaomi's Desh ka Smartphone may be one of these offerings, one that hasn't been unveiled anywhere else (read, China). Or, it may be an offering that has already been launched.

Speculation points to the Xiaomi Redmi 5A as the prime candidate for launch on November 30. The biggest factor in its favour is the fact that the Redmi India handle was used to tweet, revealing it would be a Redmi-branded device. The second biggest factor in its favour is its price - CNY 599 (roughly Rs. 5,800).

If Xiaomi manages to bring the smartphone to India at a lower price than it was made available at in China, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A may be significantly cheaper than the Xiaomi Redmi 4A, which is currently the cheapest smartphone offering from Xiaomi in India. Another factor pointing to the Redmi 5A as the smartphone to launch next week is its battery life - Xiaomi says it will offer a battery life up to 8 days, which is quite extraordinary. It also runs MIUI 9 out-of-the-box.

As for the Xiaomi Redmi 5A specifications, the dual-SIM smartphone features a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display with a pixel density of 296ppi. Much like its predecessor, the new model is also powered by the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC, clocked at 1.4GHz, and coupled with 2GB of RAM.

The Redmi 5A comes with 16GB inbuilt storage which is further expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). The dual-SIM smartphone packs a 3000mAh battery which seems to be a downgrade when compared to the 2016's Redmi 4A.

The handset sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, burst mode, panorama mode, HDR mode, and more. It comes with a 5-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture lens. It supports 1080p and 720p video recording. Connectivity options on the Redmi 5A include 4G with VoLTE, 3G, GPRS/ EDGE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Micro-USB. It comes with a hybrid SIM slot.

Moto G5S Plus full review

Moto G series has been one of the most successful versions of the company in India, even though it didn’t change the design drastically till the Moto G5. Moto G was the de facto mid-range smartphone for many in India, but in the last two years there has been growing competition from other players, especially Xiaomi and its Redmi phones.

The 2017 Moto G5 series sees a complete design overhaul. The phones now have a metal unibody design, and lot more SKUs. Moto G5S Plus is one of the newer additions with dual-rear cameras as the highlight. So how does the phone fare in terms of daily performance and are those cameras worth the extra price being charged? Here is our review.

Moto G5S Plus specifications: 5.5 Inch full HD resolution display (1080 x 1920 pixels) at 401 ppi | Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor at 2.0 Ghz | 4GB RAM + 64GB storage (expandable) | 13MP+ 13MP rear camera (RGB and Monochrome sensor) + 8MP front camera | Android Nougat 7.1| 3000 mAh battery |

Moto G5S Plus price in India: Rs 16,999 for 4GB RAM

Moto G5S Plus Design, Display review

The design is very Moto. Yes, this will remind you of the Moto G5 Plus, except there’s a huge dual-rear camera at the back. The Moto G5S Plus is bulky phone, and the camera bump really stands out on this one. On the front, Motorola sticks with all glass and pill-shaped home button. This mobile has a metal unibody design that’s become common across the board.

The fingerprint scanner is embedded in the front button as well and this was accurate most of the times I used it. Moto has also added on-screen home buttons, which come alive when you are using the phone. Frankly, this seems like a waste of space on the Moto G5S Plus’ 5.5-inch full HD resolution display.

Moto G5S Plus is on the heavier side. The gold colour version we got for review is something I didn’t mind, but it is not a colour that everyone will approve. For some users, this might appear on a tad too bling.

Moto G5S Plus sticks with the same 5.5-inch full HD resolution display that we have seen on the Moto series for sometime. At times I felt the display could have been brighter, considering a user is paying extra for this phone compared to the regular G5. Viewing videos, etc on the display is a good experience with decent viewing angles, but there’s no exceptional here on offer. This is in line with what the competition is offering.

Moto G5S Performance, Software

The highlight of the Moto G series has been the stock Android, though this is no longer a differentiating factor. Lenovophones now sport a stock Android experience as well, while rival Xiaomi’s Mi A1 sports both dual rear cameras and stock Android. Still the lack of bloatware on the Moto G5S Plus will always remains one of its highlights.

On the performance front, Moto G5S Plus gives very little cause for complaint. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and 4GB RAM version we got is more than capable of handling gaming, multi-tasking, etc. There was no noticeable lag while playing games like Asphalt 8 or any extreme heating either. The mobile phone should satisfy most users with its day-to-day performance.

In the benchmarks it scores around 63,000 plus in Antutu benchmark, which is in line with other phones running a similar processor. I tried running the PCMark battery test on this, but it kept crashing for some reason so I eventually had to give up that idea.

Moto G5S Plus Battery Review

Turbo Charging is one feature that Moto G phones have sported since the time of Moto G3 Turbo Edition and this is one major plus. The fast charging will appeal to those users who aren’t so meticulous about charging their phones over night. On the battery front, at one point I got 8 hours of screen on time with this Moto G5S Plus which is impressive. For daily usage, the phone would last 12 hours plus with moderate to heavy usage, which is in line with most mobiles in this price.

Moto G5S Plus: Dual rear cameras

Come to the USP of this phone, the dual rear cameras fail to live up the claim. The review unit I had was running a beta software, and while an update was issued for the camera, it failed to improve the problem of the dual-rear cameras.

The ‘Depth Mode’ as Motorola has named the ‘bokeh’ mode in this camera is just not fast enough when it comes to processing and saving the image. One is never sure if the image taken will be clear or not. At times, the soft haze extends to the actual object/person, which is never a good sign.

Some pictures turned out nice, especially portraits take were in office. But again, the depth effect was not so sharp in some cases and I feel these could have been brighter. Overall, in this mode the camera does struggle with smaller objects. In low-lighting the dual-rear camera is just not impressive and that’s an issue on most devices sporting two sensors. I’m hoping Motorola will fix the problems with a software update.
The rear camera in general is not bad in bright lighting conditions and it is possible to get some nice, detailed shots on this. However, the colour reproduction with reds, pinks does struggle and this is something I’ve not seen on previous Motorola phones. Also the auto-focus is sluggish and you need that extra second or two for taking the perfect picture, which is not the ideal in this price range.

Moto G5S Plus Verdict

Motorola’s Moto G5S Plus joins the growing list of mid-range, budget phones trying to offer dual-rear cameras. The design and display might not have changed, but there are two cameras at the back for those who want portrait style shots. As a general package, Moto G5S Plus has positives like a smooth performance, long battery life. But the USP which is the dual-rear camera is far from perfect. For now, I would say Moto G5S Plus is another option to add to this list and needs to offer more on this front to really stand out.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Launched

After years of largely selling its mobile devices in the consumer segment, Samsung has now brought the Galaxy Note 8 Enterprise Edition as its latest offering designed to meet the requirements of the enterprise market. The new handset is touted to offer PC-class support to target enterprise and SMB markets and is available at a price of Rs. 67,900 only available in Amazon, shop.Samsung.com & eBay.

Unlike the original Note 8, Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 Enterprise Edition comes with the promise of monthly security updates for up to three years. The South Korean company is also giving a purchase assurance that the same device model will be available for purchase up to two years from the date of its availability. This means that enterprise customers can offer consistent experience to their users without having to worry about the device going EOL at a later stage.

In addition to promising longstanding security updates and maintaining continuity, the Galaxy Note 8 Enterprise Edition has Samsung Knox Configure and Samsung Enterprise Firmware Over the Air (E-FOTA). These two features will give IT teams the ability to remote configure the hardware and manage all the devices in their organisation through a centralised interface. Furthermore, the E-FOTA integration provides software version control and scheduled updates.

"Modern enterprises are dealing with a conflict when it comes to their mobile strategies - a push and pull between what they require of IT to keep organisations secure and productive, and what their employees have come to expect when using mobile devices," said Eric McCarty, vice president of mobile B2B product marketing, Samsung Electronics America, in a statement. "We call this the IT paradox, and the Note 8 Enterprise Edition helps solve it by providing simple and comprehensive tools for IT to manage and secure their mobile environment while giving users a device they will love."

In terms of specifications, the Galaxy Note 8 Enterprise Edition is identical to the 'regular' Note 8. The smartphone features an edge-to-edge, 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display with 1440 x 2960 pixels resolution and comes with an S Pen. Enterprise users can also leverage Samsung DeX capabilities to connect their Galaxy Note 8 with a desktop.

Samsung's latest attempt with the Galaxy Note 8 Enterprise Edition is not the first attempt by smartphone manufacturers to target the enterprise market. Ontario-based BlackBerry had widely adopted a similar approach in the past. Apple has also expanded its Device Enrollment Program (DEP) with the iOS 11 release to enable enterprises to deploy multiple iPhone and iPad devices.

Moreover, the enterprise version of the Galaxy Note 8 emerges just at the time when Apple is preparing to shipthe its ultra-premium iPhone X. The iPhone X comes with features like Face ID integration and a bezel-less, Super Retina display.

Xiaomi's 'New Smartphone Series' India Launch Set for Today

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Xiaomi will also announced the MIUI 9 Global Stable update
  • As Redmi India has been teasing the launch, a Redmi phone is expected
  • No other details are known about the phone, except its selfie focus

Xiaomi India is all set to a brand new smartphone series in the country on Thursday, and alongside, will also make an announcement related to the release of MIUI 9 Global Stable update. It remains uncertain which smartphone the Chinese company is expected to launch, with the only hints Xiaomi has provided so far being the handset's selfie focus and that it's from a new series altogether. As it has done in the past, the company can also be expected to rebrand a smartphone for the Indian market. The New Delhi launch event kicks off at 12pm IST, and will be streamed live on the Mi.com site.

While initially, the Xiaomi Mi Note 3smartphone was expected to be launched in India - after all, that would indeed be a 'brand new series' for the country, as no Mi Note smartphone has made it here so far - Xiaomi later refuted that speculation. This, combined with the fact that the Redmi India Twitter handle was also promoting the launch, leads us to believe Thursday's launch will be of a new Redmi series smartphone. We'll have to wait and see. Stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for the latest news from the event.

Finally, let's speak about MIUI 9. The latest version of Xiaomi's custom Android ROM was first unveiled back in July, and has since been made available in various betas. Xiaomi has confirmed that the release of MIUI 9 Global Stable update, meant for devices outside China, will be announced at Thursday's launch event.

MIUI 9 offers faster app load times (hence the #LightningFast teaser), new design elements, shortcuts on lock screen, split screen feature, smart functionality, and more. Another highlight is the new Image feature search that has the ability to distinguish your images by typing in keywords.

Also new in MIUI 9 is the Smart Assistant feature will let you search for pretty much anything on your phone and swiping to right on the home screen will bring up the search along with app suggestions, news and other customisable widgets, similar to Apple's Spotlight feature for iOS.

Other new features include a Smart app launcher that suggests apps to launch based on the content on the screen. The latest OS also brings three new themes, No Boundary, Colour Fantasy, and, Cool Black as well as a new default theme. Additional new features include a new design on the lock screen, a new shortcut to activate the torch by swiping right on the lock screen. The split-screen feature that was launched with Android 7.0 Nougat can now be found on MIUI 9 as well.

5G is Coming

5th generation mobile networks or 5th generation wireless systems, in short, is known as 5G. It is the latest proposed telecommunications standard after 4G, 3G and 2G. The mobile data world is now fully equipped with 4G LTE networks. Recently, after the introduction of Reliance Jio network in India, the country has got a huge 4G network boost and is also ready for the next chapter. 5G network is the next chapter in the telecommunications standard, which will make our smartphones even more fast and powerful. Companies such as Qualcomm, Huawei and Nokia are working very hard to shape the standards of 5G. Today, we will look at the best 5G mobiles available in the world. Actually, there are upcoming smartphones that will get launched in the second half of 2017 and first half of 2018. However, before checking these best 5G phones, let’s have a look at the characteristics of 5G network.
First of all, let’s find out what is 5G? It is an upcoming telecom network system which will have much higher speeds and capacity along with much lower latency, compared to existing cellular systems. The technologies which are going to be used in 5G are still being defined. Mostly, 5G networks will be using a type of encoding called OFDM, similar to the one used in 4G LTE. 5G networks will be much smaller and smarter, compared to any previous systems. According to reports, the standard bodies are aiming at 20Gbps speeds at 1ms latency.
5G will not only enable better usage of smartphones, but it will also start the era of driverless smart cars and smart homes. In the smartphone sector, the biggest change with the introduction of 5G is expected in the field of AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality). In USA, AT&T and Verizon is expected to launch pre-5G in 2017 but official 5G will get launched in 2018 and will go mainstream by 2019.

Xiaomi Available in India for Offline Sale

You can now purchase some of your favourite Xiaomi smartphones from your neighbourhood Big Bazaar store. The Chinese smartphone maker has announced that it has partnered with Future Group's supermarket chain to sell Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 handsets from the offline store during the festive season.

Manu Kumar Jain, vice president of Xiaomi, said the company will be making the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi 4 at more than 240 stores of Big Bazaar. This is the first time any brand is selling phones at a supermarket chain, Jain tweeted.
At the Big Bazaar, Xiaomi says it will provide customers with a range of offers including no cost EMI for ICICI Bank card holders. The move comes as Xiaomi doubles down its effort to cash in on the Diwali festive season. During Diwali, the festival of light, people tend to spend lavishly.

Xiaomi has had a good run with the recent online sales by Flipkart and Amazon. Last week, the company said it had sold more than one million units in India in just two days. Since entering the country three years ago, Xiaomi has sold more than 10 million units in this country.
